Having a successful garage sale is all about preparation and presentation. Here are some tips to get you started:
Safety:
- Traffic: there will be heavy traffic in the neighborhood. We will notify the Douglas County Sheriff and ask them to patrol the area.
- Plan for cash management: Have a small cash float on hand to make change. Consider keeping a larger amount of cash secure inside your home and bringing it out in smaller batches.
- Hide expensive items you’re not selling: make sure to put away or cover items in your garage that you are not selling (e.g. bikes, skis, etc)
- Don’t let people into your house: If someone asks to use the restroom, politely decline.
- Beware of distractions: If someone tries to distract you, don’t be afraid to stop the conversation and ask for clarification.
Before The Sale:
- Set up early (or the night before): Make sure everything is priced and organized before potential customers arrive. A well-organized sale is more inviting to browse.
- Gather your goods: Declutter your house and sort through things you no longer need or use. Clothes, toys, furniture, and housewares are all popular garage sale items.
- Price everything: Price each item clearly and fairly. Generally, aim for a price that’s 10-30% of the original retail price.
- Advertise: We will do this for you. You just need to show up and sell.
The Day of the Sale:
- Refresh your displays: Throughout the day, move unsold items to the front of the table to keep your display looking fresh and interesting.
- Be prepared to haggle: This is part of the garage sale experience. Be willing to negotiate on some items, especially if someone is buying multiple things.
- Have plenty of change: People will be paying with cash, so make sure you have a good amount of change on hand to make giving back easy.
Bonus Tips:
- Offer multiple payment options: Consider taking digital payments through a service like Venmo or Zelle to attract more buyers.
- Bundle similar items: Sell books, DVDs, or small toys in groups for a discounted price.
- Have fun! A positive attitude goes a long way. You’re decluttering your home and making some extra cash, so enjoy the process!
